Cresci lendo o Geraldão e os cartuns do Glauco. Numa Bienal, acho que por volta de 1986, ele estava autografando um livrinho do Geraldão. No meu exemplar ele desenhou o Geraldão e escreveu: "Para o Zé, um Geraldão bronha. Glauco". Foi o autógrafo mais legal que eu ganhei na vida.

Seu traço era original demais. Um talento natural, tão espontâneo. Um artista único. Um senso de humor incrível. E as ousadias, maravilhosas. Adorava tudo que ele fazia.

Fiquei muito triste e chocado ao saber do que aconteceu com ele e seu filho, uma estupidez e brutalidade que mata a gente por dentro.

Aquele lugar na página de quadrinhos da Ilustrada vai ser para sempre do Geraldão, da Dona Marta, do casal Neuras e de tantos outros personagens inesquecíveis. Espero que ele tivesse pelo menos alguma noção de quantas risadas e encantamento seus desenhos provocavam diariamente em milhares e milhares de pessoas que nunca puderam lhe agradecer pessoalmente.

Instrumentation: three violins, three violas, three cellos, and basso continuo (including harpsichord).

The second movement consists of a single measure with the two chords that make up a so-called 'Phrygian cadence' and—although there is no direct evidence to support it—it was likely that these chords are meant to surround or follow a cadenza improvised by a harpsichord or violin player.

Modern performance approaches run a gamut from simply playing the cadence with minimal ornamentation (treating it as a sort of "musical semicolon"), to inserting movements from other works, to cadenzas varying in length from under a minute to over two minutes. Notably, Wendy Carlos's three electronic performances (from Switched-On Bach, Switched-On Brandenburgs, and Switched-On Bach 2000) have second movements that are completely different from each other.

Occasionally, the third movement from Bach's "Sonata for Violin and Continuo in G , BWV. 1021" (marked Largo) is substituted for the second movement as it contains an identical 'Phrygian cadence' as the closing chords. The Adagio from the Violin Sonata in G, BWV 1019a, has also been used. It has a flourish of different notes.

The outer movements use the ritornello form found in many instrumental and vocal works of the time. The first movement can also be found in reworked form as the sinfonia of the cantata BWV 174, "Ich liebe den Höchsten von ganzem Gemüte", with the addition of three oboes and two horns.

Speedball é o uso por via endovenosa de cocaína e heroína simultaneamente, o que prolonga e intensifica o efeito de ambas as drogas. É também altamente letal. Hoje passei o Facelift do Alice in Chains para o iPod e acabei lendo sobre a morte do cantor do grupo, Layne Staley. Foi achado em seu apartamento, quase duas semanas após morrer. A autópsia concluiu que a causa foi Speedball. Na época ele estava com 34 anos e pesando 40 kg.

Outros artistas que morreram pelo uso de Speedball: Hillel Slovak, primeiro guitarrista do Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Belushi e Chris Farley, atores e comediantes que começaram no Saturday Night live, River Phoenix, irmão do Joaquin, Mitch Hedberg, um comediante de stand-up "peculiar", também tinha fobia social e evitava olhar para a platéia ("I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too."), e Jean-Michel Basquiat. On a remote atoll in the Pacific Ocean, the United States successfully detonates Mike, the world’s first hydrogen bomb. The 10.4-megaton thermonuclear device, built upon the Teller-Ulam principles of staged radiation implosion, instantly vaporised an entire island and left behind a crater more than a mile wide. The incredible explosive force of Mike was also apparent from the magnitude of its mushroom cloud, within 90 seconds the mushroom cloud climbed to 17 km and entered the stratosphere. One minute later, it reached 33 km, eventually stabilising at a ceiling of 36 km. Half an hour after the test, the mushroom stretched 96 km across, with the base of the head joining the stem at 14 km. Its explosive power was more than 800 times that of the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima in 1945. In 1955, the Soviet Union detonated a hydrogen bomb on the same principle of radiation implosion, and the world started to live under the threat of thermonuclear war for the first time in history.

I have a completely irrational, unfailing love for 'Poltergeist.' It was my favorite film as a kid, so much so that I saw it about six times in the theater and watched it incessantly on HBO. Here was a great story with great characters and great special effects, and since I've always loved horror movies, this PG-rated spookfest made me feel like a kid in a candy store. (Even better, I didn't need to sneak in to see it!) I've since revisited it many times over the years, and continue to be surprised at how well it holds up, both as familial drama and a highly-entertaining, compulsively watchable ghost story. So to say that this review will be at all objective is, of course, completely laughable. I'm just gonna gush.

Though there have been reams of discussion on who the real author of 'Poltergeist' is -- Spielberg or Hooper -- it's clear that thematically, this is Spielberg's show all the way. It displays in spades his penchant for generalized spirituality without overt religious allusion. Nowhere is this more clearly defined than in what may be the film's thematic centerpiece, when Straight explains to Diane and her son the nature of "the other side." Rather than some sort of apocalyptic judgment day, Spielberg's afterlife comes off as a sort of heavenly paradise whose only requirement for entrance is that you die. There is no Christian fundamentalism or gooey new-agey gobbledygook at work in Spielberg's intentions -- just an all-encompassing, admirable wish-fulfillment fantasy in which a wondrous world of pure love awaits us on the other side.

This conceit is the anchor that gives 'Poltergeist' it's true dramatic weight. Spielberg makes it essential that Diane and (in particular) Steve are ex-'70s liberals who have now been fully Reaganized, yet still have the heart of hippies (they are even seen rolling a joint late one night while the children fall asleep). On the surface, 'Poltergeist' is often dismissed as little more than an effects-filled story of one family's supernatural rescue mission of their little girl. But the real reason the film has resonated for twenty-five years is because it's really the journey of two modern suburbanites who must reclaim their belief in the spiritual, at least if they are to restore their metaphysically-fractured family. That it is the ultimate symbol of '80s consumerism -- the TV set -- that the ghosts use to first attract Carol Anne is certainly no coincidence.

'Poltergeist' has endured despite zero body count and bloodless setpieces (a boy-eating tree, a demented clown hiding under the bed, a swimming pool filled with corpses) by expertly exploiting both childhood and adult traumas with a perfect fairy-tale touch.

The Video: Sizing Up the Picture

'Poltergeist' hit DVD as one of MGM's initial launch titles way back in March 1997. Of course, I immediately ran out and bought it the first day it was available, and at the time I thought it looked pretty darn good. (In any case, it was better than the old laserdisc.) Unfortunately, time has not been kind to that ancient DVD, which now looks like complete and utter artifact-riddled mush. Thankfully, Warner finally restored the film for its 25th anniversary last year, and now, after another year wait for us high-def fans, the film has finally crossed over to Blu-ray.

The Supplements: Digging Into the Good Stuff

Here's the huge disappointment of this set. These extras totally blow. In fairness to Warner, however, a birdie in the know tells me it has always been camp Steven Spielberg that has nixed the idea of a true 'Poltergeist' making-of (due to the still-sensitive issues over who really directed the film, etc.) So instead of cast and crew interviews and all that sort of good stuff, all we get is an utterly lame "documentary" on real-life spook hunters. Ugh..

I love 'Poltergeist.' It was one of my favorite films as a kid, and twenty-five years has not diluted its entertainment value. It is compulsively watchable, filled with memorable characters, and still spooky (if not actually scary). This Blu-ray is a great remaster, with sharp video and audio. The only disappointment is the utterly lame extras which even the Blu-ray-exclusive DigiBook packaging can't save. But buy this Blu-ray for the movie and tech quality, and you won't be disappointed.

Quando estou ouvindo a CBN e toca a musiquinha do Cony e do Xexéu eu coloco na Band News que é a hora do José Simão com o Boechat e o Megale. Mas depois do Simão tem que mudar porque vem o chatão do Milton Neves. Outros que me fazem mudar de estação é o Gilberto "o que que vc acha dessa idéia Heródoto" Dimenstein e o Sérgio "sapo da Juréia" Abranches na CBN

Zé, essa foi a melhor, do Dimenstein. Todos os dia eu penso isso. Por que ele sempre pergunta o que o âncora acha da idéia dele? Isso é 'fishing for compliments', é pedir elogios diariamente. Claro que o outor vai dizer que a idéia é boa, que a sugestão é ótima e tudo mais.!!!

Artigo cheio de erros de Sérgio Augusto

Em junho de 2008 o Guardian publicou um artigo entitulado Welcome to 'the disco', escrito por Clive Stafford Smith, diretor da associação britânica Reprieve, que defende direitos humanos de prisioneiros.

Sérgio Augusto utilizou-se desse artigo para escrever "Choque elétrico musical no agito da masmorra", publicado no caderno Aliás do Estadão de 27/07/08, porém com vários erros e informações falsas, mudando ou criando fatos, como nomes de músicas, para que se adequassem à sua opinião ou dessem mais "tempero" a seu artigo.

Sérgio Augusto ainda citou o nome do autor do artigo original, Clive Stafford Smith, como Clifford Stafford Smith, e escreveu que Smith é "mestre de cerimônias do Meltdown Festival, realizado em Londres". No artigo do Guardian, Smith citou esse festival porque nele foi dado destaque ao problema de se usar música como tortura. Smith já escreveu vários artigos sobre tortura.

Não teria sido melhor o Estadão adquirir os direitos do artigo original do Guardian e traduzí-lo?

Se não é importante citar corretamente os nomes das músicas utilizadas nem dos autores, citá-los para quê?

Segue uma lista de erros.

A música "Apocalytic Fear" do Deicide não está na lista compilada pela revista Mother Jones. "Enter Sandman" do Metallica estava na lista, mas não "Overkill", que é uma música do grupo Motorhead que o Metallica tocou em um álbum de covers.

"Killing in the name of", do grupo Rage Against the Machine, é citada na lista do site da Reprieve como música usada para tortura, e Bulls On Parade, do mesmo grupo, está na lista da Mother Jones, mas nenhuma lista mostra "Bombs over Baghdad", outra música desse grupo.

Quanto ao AC/DC, "Shoot To Thrill" e "Hell's Bells" estão nas listas, mas não "The Razor's Edge".

"Creeping Death" é uma música do Metallica que o grupo Drowning Pool tocou como cover no festival Ozzfest. A música do Drowning Pool que aparece na lista é "Bodies". O artigo diz escreve que Creeping Death é do Drowning Pool e que está na lista.

A música "I Love You" é do programa infantil de TV do Dinossauro Barney. Sua letra foi composta por Bob Singleton, que foi diretor musical do show e escreveu um artigo no LA Times sobre o uso dela como tortura. A melodia foi emprestada de "This Old Man", uma canção de ninar tradicional. Segundo Sergio Augusto, David Gray escreveu "I Love You Babe", citando erroneamente a autoria e o título da música. De onde ele tirou o título "I Love You Babe" não se sabe.

David Gray escreveu "Babylon", também utilizada como tortura. Esse uso é citado no Guardian, mas se Sergio Augusto tivesse procurado um pouco mais, acharia o artigo da BBC "Torture chamber music" que explica que a canção não era utilizada inteira, apenas a o trecho com a palavra "Babylon" era repetido seguidamente. Foi isso que Haj Ali foi forçado a ouvir, e não "I Love You Babe" como Augusto escreveu.

Sergio Augusto ainda distorceu os depoimentos de Steve Asheim do Deicide e de James Hetfield do Metallica como se ambos defendessem a tortura de forma sádica.

Segundo Sergio Augusto, Asheim disse que "os prisioneiros de Guantanamo aguentam tudo". No artigo do Guardian o baterista do Deicide questiona se música é tortura, diz que os prisioneiros foram treinados para resisitir à tortura e que a tortura que os prisioneiros esperavam era serem queimados ou terem seus ossos quebrados, e não música. Asheim diz que não acredita em tortura e não acredita que música alta possa ser considerada tortura.

Ainda no artigo do Guardian, James Hetfield disse: "se os iraquianos não estão acostumados à liberdade, então fico feliz de fazer parte da exposição deles [à liberdade]. Nós castigamos nossos parentes, esposas e pessoas amadas com essa música desde sempre, por que seria diferente com os iraquianos?". Compare com o que Sergio Augusto escreveu: "Para Hetfield, o iraquianos merecem ser punidos porque não estão acostumados com a liberdade".

Why the Religious Minded Won't like this Book

The book is a fascinating look, much like the author's previous work "Sex in History", at what makes man so entertaining.

The religious reader will not like the book as it points out how many religious laws and prohibitions are based on cultural mores derived from common sense, not edicts from God. The Hindu belief in the Sacredness of Cows, the Jewish Kosher laws, Islam's ban on pork, all have their foundation in perfectly reasonable prohibitions for those cultures at a given time in history. The fact they became religious laws illustrates that religion was a convenient way to enforce societal rules in absence of a strong central authority. They served the same purpose as the fabled Ten Commandments of the nomadic tribal Jews. The threat of eternal damnation has always been and still is a persuasive deterrent to those with primitive, superstitious and unsophisticated minds.

India was conquered by a nomadic culture who imposed the common sense belief that a live milk producing cow could feed more people for a longer period than one that was butchered and eaten.
Pretty much common sense.

Like her previous work "Sex in History" the author is insightful and amusing in her presentation of facts too many people would like to ignore, that illustrate the all too shaky and fragile basis for so many of our cherished beliefs.

"Danger: Avoid Death."

That warning was selected Wednesday as the winner of the 11th annual "Wacky Warning Label Contest," sponsored by Michigan Lawsuit Abuse Watch. The contest is part of an effort to show the effects of lawsuits on warning labels.

Kevin Soave of Farmington Hills, a Detroit suburb, won the $500 grand prize for submitting the tractor's "Danger: Avoid Death" label.

2nd place: label on an iron-on T-shirt transfer: "Do not iron while wearing shirt."

3rd place: label on a baby stroller featuring a small storage pouch: "Do not put child in bag."

Contest organizer Bob Dorigo Jones says the silly labels reflect how broken America's civil justice system is. "Predatory lawyers know they can file ridiculous lawsuits against innocent product makers and blackmail them into a cash settlement — even in cases in which a user has ignored common sense," Dorigo Jones said in a statement Wednesday.

Honorable mention: label on a letter opener: "Caution: Safety goggles recommended."

2nd honorable mention "The Vanishing Fabric Marker should not be used as a writing instrument for signing checks or any legal documents."

I had an odd experience driving and listening to the radio yesterday - switched on and heard what for a few bars I thought was Bartok (something like the middle movements of Concerto for Orchestra). I liked it a lot and thought "Hmmm this is better Bartok than I remember" - then realised it was Mahler's 4th symphony, in a very good

Friday night's Performance on 3 - you can listen again. Have you had similar cases of mistaken identity when listening blind, including such howlers as above?

Or maybe Bartok and Mahler have echoes I was previously unaware of - he passage was for woodwind, and maybe their woodwind writing had similarities? the bit I heard was the start of the second movement, which actually does sound a bit like Concerto for Orchestra

It doesn't strike me as that much of a howler -- Mahler was Austrian, Bartók Hungarian; both were rooted in the same late 19th-century traditions; both wrote "night music," etc. -- and, in the end, you realized what the piece actually was. In 1581, Galileo Galilei discovered the isochronism of pendulums, that is, he discovered that pendulums (of any given length) vibrated in the same time, whether the amplitude was large or small.

About a century passed before pendulums were successfully applied to clocks by Christian Huyghens (circa 1659) and George Graham (c 1715). The problem solved by them was to develop an escapement, the mechanism for delivering impulses to the pendulum, which will keep it in motion and yet not interfere with its motion.

In 1696, Etieune Loulie made the first recorded attempt to apply the pendulum to a metronome. His "machine" was merely an adjustable pendulum with calibrations but without an escapement to keep it in motion. He was followed by a line of inventors, whose attempts were unsuccessful owing to the great length of pendulum required to beat some of the low tempos used in music (40 to 60 per min).

In 1812, Dietrik Nikolaus Winkel found that a double weighted pendulum (a weight on each side of the pivot) would beat low tempos, even when made of short length. Johann Nepenuk Maelzel, through some questionable practice, appropriated Winkel's idea and in 1816 started manufacturing the "Maelzel's Metronome". It has been in highly successful use to this day. It is manufactured by Swiss, German, French and American manufacturers who vie with each other for the limited business available.

Fui inventar de fazer um queijo e vinho ontem e fui dormir cheio, deu em pesadelo. Sonhei que havia acontecido algum problema (greve? revolta?) em uma cidade americana (sabia do nome no sonho, agora esqueci... Atlanta? Atlanta deve ter ficado na cabeça por causa da música RU Ready 2 Rock - BOC ao vivo, Some Enchanted Evening, "Atlanta, Georgia,... Blue... Oyster... Cult!"... era no Novo México?). E o Bush mandou soltar uma bomba atômica na cidade. E eu olhava para as imagens e chorava. Lembro de falar "O cara fez isso com o próprio povo dele!". Não havia o brilho intenso nas imagens, mas uma explosão em jato como a saída de um foguete, de cor vermelha, formando em seguida o cogumelo atômico. Olhava e pensava em quantas mortes ao mesmo tempo estavam acontecendo. Também pensei como as bolsas deviam estar caindo. E ainda pensei "ainda bem que eu tirei a maior parte."

Marta Suplicy já fez 47 viagens pela FAB desde que assumiu ministério

RIO - Enquanto a população sofre com os atrasos de vôos nos aeroportos, a ministra do Turismo, Marta Suplicy, relaxa numa aeronave da Força Aérea Brasileira (FAB), em mais uma viagem, a 47ª desde que assumiu a pasta. Desta vez, Marta decolou para El Salvador, onde participa da 46ª Reunião da Comissão Regional das Américas da Organização Mundial de Turismo, das Nações Unidas.

Diferentemente dos usuários comuns, a ministra tinha motivos para “relaxar e gozar”, como sugeriu na semana passada a quem estava com problemas para embarcar. A representante brasileira na reunião não teve problemas e chegou a tempo em seu compromisso oficial.

Marta Suplicy parou de viajar em aviões de carreira depois que deu a infeliz declaração. Algumas pessoas mais ligadas à ministra afirmam ser coincidência, mas existe a desconfiança de que ela estaria com medo da reação dos passageiros.

Segundo o ministério, a solicitação feita à Aeronáutica foi para que o avião levasse a ministra e a trouxesse no sábado. O ministério informou, porém, que a decisão de esperar ou não será da FAB, que avaliará a necessidade do uso da aeronave.

Arnold plays a futuristic regular Joe who gets a memory implant to simulate a Mars vacation. But messing with his noggin triggers an unknown cloak-and-dagger past involving bullet-riddled double crosses, a three-breasted Martian prostitute, and a rebel leader named Kuato — a Yoda-ish homunculus growing out of some dude's chest. It makes sense...honest.

- System of a Down: Mesmerize / Hypnotize - Tão bom que a banda meio que acabou. Drop-D.
- The Darkness: One-Way Ticket to Hell... and Back - Todas as músicas são boas, não precisa pular uma - coisa rara. Rock legal, vocalista carismático, guitarra vai de AC/DC a Queen
- Franz Ferdinand - O primeiro foi legal. O segundo não. Pois é.
- Keane - Duas músicas muito legais no primeiro (Someplace we only know e... ?). O resto nem foi tão legal, e o segundo CD menos ainda.

Peer Review

Peer review in science is a good thing, in the sense that it works better than any other process you can think of. But how well does it work? Dilbert Blog reader Jeff points to this link about the limits of peer review.

The article fits my preconceived notions quite well. Assuming scientists are human beings, it seems to me that most peer reviewers would fall into one of these categories:

1. Asshole
2. Biased egomaniac
3. Nice person who doesn’t want to make people feel bad
4. Too busy to put any quality thought into it
5. Person with low self-esteem who doesn’t want others to succeed in his or her field
6. Coward who doesn’t want to rock the boat

I suppose some scientists have plenty of free time, no biases, and would be happy to see colleagues succeed beyond their own careers. But seriously, how many of those scientists could there be? I don’t know any non-scientists who could fit that description.

Still, I assume peer review works well enough for killing the worst ideas. I don’t have a better idea for evaluating science. It’s just important to keep things in perspective.

The Saga of Leatherface and His Signature Power Tool

How many chainsaw massacres can one state possibly contain? One more, at least, from the look of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning,” a prequel to a remake of a 1974 film that spawned numerous sequels and numberless copycats. There’s more to come, no doubt, given the bloodlust for torture and indifference to depravity characteristic of contemporary horror films. Every era gets the scare pictures it deserves, and there is nothing more unsettling in this orgy of hate than its overwhelming stench of corporate nihilism.

Written by Sheldon Turner and directed by Jonathan Liebesman, “The Beginning” mindlessly repeats the archetypal “Chainsaw” scenario. Four hotties venture into backwoods Texas and are set upon by a clan of psychopathic cannibal hillbillies. The sick twist is that while the youngsters ostensibly function as an audience surrogate (who wouldn’t want to be that sexy and avoid being disemboweled?), the movie’s real sympathies lie with that clan, the Hewitts. The film delights in exploring their iconography. Where did Leatherface get his flesh mask, and how did he come to select his signature power tool? What’s the back story of Officer Hoyt (R. Lee Ermey), and why does he eat people?

The answers are beside the point. The movie exists to brutalize. Like “The Passion of the Christ,” it is an invitation to hard-core sadism. Mel Gibson tried to turn atrocity into spiritual catharsis. The producers of “The Beginning” merely package it, sell it to the masses and hope they don’t vomit in their nachos.

“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning” is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). Extremely graphic sadism and stomach-turning nihilism.

Ao comentar o artigo de Renato Janine Ribeiro (Folha, 18/02/2007) em sua última coluna de 25/02/2007, Elio Gaspari escreve que "a ética de Janine é assustadora", referindo-se ao trecho "torço para que, na cadeia, os assassinos [do menino João Hélio] recebam sua paga; torço para que a recebam de modo demorado e sofrido".

Porém, referindo-se a Suzane Richthofen e aos irmãos Cravinhos (Folha, 12/04/2006), Gaspari sugeriu que "uma temporada numa [penitenciária] SuperMax poderia levá-los a contar a verdade a respeito do assassinato do casal Manfred e Marísia von Richthofen", já que as SuperMax podem servir de "fator de dissuasão para os delinqüentes", pois "quem entra
numa SuperMax tem um só objetivo na vida: sair de lá".

Gostaria de registrar meu horror em relação aos crimes citados. Porém, acho preocupante o fato de que tanto Gaspari quanto Janine parecem defender algum tipo de tortura, seja com o objetivo de se extrair uma confissão ou apenas para punir. Mais preocupante ainda, por se tratarem de um jornalista conhecido por denunciar a tortura no Brasil e de um professor titular de Ética e Filosofia Política da USP.

Língua de Trapo ao vivo em 1985 tocando "Os Metaleiros Também Amam" no Festival dos Festivais da Rede Globo

Em 1985 a TV Globo realizou o "Festival dos Festivais". Quem viu deve se lembrar da Tetê Espíndola cantando Escrito nas Estrelas, vencedora do Festival.

Outros destaques foram Oswaldo Montenegro, que consolidou sua fama de chato cantando a terrível Condor com um coral de 25 pessoas vestidas de branco (Condor foi "homenageada" por Fernanda Young e Alexandre Machado no seriado Os Aspones), e o Língua de Trapo, que ficou entre os finalistas com Os Metaleiros Também Amam. Zebra total, quase 20 anos antes do Massacration. O filme "This is Spinal Tap", de 1984, também fazia gozação com os exageros das bandas de heavy metal.

O primeiro Rock in Rio havia acontecido em janeiro daquele ano e o termo metaleiro estava na moda. Pela primeira vez vieram ao Brasil Iron Maiden (turnê do Powerslave, Bruce Dickinson se apresentou com calça spandex amarela), AC/DC (com o Angus cabeludo... nessa ocasião o Herbert Vianna dos Paralamas comentou que o Angus tinha "a mão dura"), Whitesnake (com John Sykes na guitarra, "Love Ain't No Stranger" do álbum "Slide It In" virou hit no Brasil), Ozzy Osbourne (turnê do Bark at the Moon; o Ozzy não virou lobisomem no palco como alguns chegaram a prever, mas abusou dos baldes d'água) e os Scorpions (turnê do "Love at First Sting" - Still Loving You foi hit).

O video é da semifinal, a apresentação que deixou o Língua entre os 12 finalistas. A apresentação na última noite foi um pouco decepcionante se comparada a esta.

Idéia: pesquisar a origem do corinho ô-ô-ô estilo Iron Maiden.

Laert Sarrumor e... ? (qual o nome do outro vocalista? ele está sensacional) dividiram os vocais. A música é de Ayrton Mugnaini Jr e Carlos Melo. Na guitarra-solo, Lizoel Costa, que de vez em quando colabora no blog do Língua de Trapo.

Mas seria melhor ainda se o Sérgio citasse o artigo que aparentemente o inspirou a escrever este artigo, escrito por Jon Wiener e publicado em seu blog no site da revista "The Nation" semana passada (15/01/07), "24": Torture on TV. link alternativo

Na Folha, Sérgio Dávila escreve: "Cada vez que assisto, sinto um frio na espinha. Na quarta temporada, [Jack Bauer] chegou a pedir demissão..." e descreve a mesma cena citada por Jon Wiener. Pode ser exagero meu, mas ao ler o artigo do Sérgio tive a impressão de que ele viu a cena da quarta temporada, achou um bom exemplo para escrever sobre tortura e os neocons e foi atrás de informações. Mas agora parece que quem fez isso foi o Jon Wiener.

As informações sobre o salário do Kiefer Sutherland, a opinião do Alan Dershowitz, e o evento patrocinado pela Heritage Foundation à venda no site da c-span são todos citados no artigo da Nation.

Googlei Lonesome Cool, personagem de uma história em quadrinhos do Spirit, do Will Eisner que li pela primeira vez com 6 ou 7 anos, por volta de 1976, lembro que estava com meus pais em Águas de São Pedro. Era o Gibi Especial número 1, com o Spirit correndo à frente de um trem em um trilho suspenso e a chamada "9 histórias clássicas de mistério e suspense".

Não encontrei nada sobre a história, que na época me impressionou muito. Recentemente me lembrei dela ao ler sobre alguns filmes de gângsteres relançados em DVD. Em White Heat, de 1949, James Cagney é Cody Jarrett, um gângster psicopata com fixação pela mãe, assim como Lonesome Cool. "Made it, Ma! Top of the World!" é uma frase famosa do filme. Os quadrinhos foram publicados em 18/12/1949, e Eisner deve ter sido influenciado pelo filme. Imagino que a inspiração foi óbvia na época. Leio ainda no IMDb que a relação entre o vilão e sua mãe dominadora foi inspirada na gang de ladrões de banco da Mãe Barker e seus filhos (Kate "Ma" Barker).

A RGE (que depois virou a Editora Globo) republicou material da editora americana Warren - esse Gibi especial foi baseado no número 3 da revista Spirit (Warren) de agosto de 1974 ("one of the best single issue of comics Warren ever published"), com a mesma capa e algumas histórias a menos ou a mais.

O interessante é que foram histórias escolhidas a dedo. Até hoje me lembro do sócio do Lonesome Cool, Frankie Spade, queimado no incêndio do túnel, pedindo de volta a medalha que a mãe havia lhe dado "quando éramos guris"... e a bala nas costas...

Apesar dessa ter me impressionado mais que todas, as outras histórias também não ficaram atrás... os cadáveres no bonde, o Spirit de muletas, as mãos do Dr. Anschluss, a velhinha assassina, o morador paranóico...

Depois disso, sempre que lia algo do Spirit pensava "será que todas as melhores histórias do Spirit foram publicadas naquele número?".

O Ilusionista, Morumbi Shopping.

Havia lido que tinha um final surpresa, deu para adivinhar na metade do filme.

A barba do Edward Norton estava meio fake. O príncipe estava com cara de 1900 mesmo. Lembrei do Nicolau II. Giammati com perebas múltiplas na testa. Muitos truques impossíveis.

Families visiting Disneyland on their holiday this week saw a life-size Guantanamo bay inmate standing inside the Rocky Mountain Railroad ride at Disneyland in Anaheim California.
The sculpture, consisting of an inflatable doll dressed in an orange jumpsuit with its hands and feet manacled remained in place for one and a half hours before Disneyland's security staff shut down the ride and removed it amid fears over public safety. The artist: Banksy.

Ainda sobre Erbarme dich, a melhor versão está na primeira gravação da Paixão pelo Karl Richter, com a austríaca Hertha Töpper. Imbatível. Ouvi pela primeira vez numa coleção de clássicos da Abril, dois discos de vinil, um com o Messias do Haendel e outro com a Paixão.

Ontem estava vendo o DVD da Paixão segundo S. Mateus com Karl Richter na Laserland, fui direto checar o "Erbarme dich", um senhor que ouviu de fora entrou na sala para dizer que aquela era a peça musical mais linda já escrita por alguém. Foi muito legal.

Almoço de domingo no Nello. Sardela com muito açúcar - sem comparação com a do Piero, por exemplo. Meia porção de pão no forno com tomates, com MUITO alho, e meia com tempero de aliche - a única coisa que foi realmente boa. Gnochi com molho de tomate, cebola e manjericão medíocre. Spaghetti de massa caseira à carbonara - Não gostei da massa; bacon miúdo e torrado (prefiro em pedaços grandes e "mal passado"). Molho cremoso e medíocre. Serviço MUITO demorado, cardápio vem com desculpa furada de que a filosofia é de "slow food". Na velocidade em que fomos servidos a casa deveria diminuir para 1/6 do seu tamanho para o atendimento ser decente. Meia porçãodá um prato exato, sai barato mas não vale a pena. Pastiera de grano boa, tartufo, não me faz falta. Não volto.

Toro

Sábado à noite: Jantar no Toro. Entrada: um copinho de gazpacho, um bolinho de queijo e uma colher com patê de pescados para cada um, pão simples e maionese temperada (boazinha). Entrada, polvo cozido com batatas, uma porção dá para duas pessoas, bom mas não memórável. Quase pedi paella de lula na tinta mas fui desencorajado. Fomos de paella normal - lula, camarões e mariscos. Nada especial. Camarões sem gosto. No menu diz que é para duas mas uma porção dá para quatro pessoas. Uma jarra de sangria foi suficiente para três pessoas - estava boa. R$ 85 para cada um. Não volto mais.
